Why traceability matters

One of the key challenges highlighted in the National Building Product Assurance Framework was the lack of agreed standards for how building product information is created, managed, stored, and shared. Without consistency, it becomes difficult for industry participants to access reliable, trusted, and comparable product information when they need it. This creates real risks for both industry and government, including inefficiencies, market failures, and Australia falling behind international trading partners.

What the Framework sets out to do

To address these challenges, the National Building Products Assurance Framework made recommendations across five key areas. One of these focuses on Product Traceability and Identification.

The goal is simple: To enable everyone across the building supply chain to share accurate, trusted product information efficiently and consistently, reducing uncertainty and improving confidence in building products.

Traceability & Digitalisation Guide

The Traceability and Digitalisation Guide is an implementation guide designed for the Australian construction supply chain.

The guide:

• Provides the foundational elements needed to support digital traceability across all product types
• Supports traceability along the entire supply chain, from manufacture through to installation and ongoing maintenance and reuse
• Enables the sharing of accessible, verifiable, timely and consistent product information
• Helps link a building product’s digital information to its physical movement through the supply chain

By improving how product information is shared, the guide supports better decision-making, stronger accountability, and greater confidence in building products.
